September is designated Anaphylaxis Awareness Month in Canada
and as such it’s an excellent opportunity to raise awareness
of anaphylaxis and help educate the greater community of the
issues faced by those at risk.
Do your part and help spread the word. Here’s some
helpful information you can use in your efforts to become
an “allergy ambassador” this year:
- British Columbia establishes Anaphylaxis Advisory
Committee. The BC Ministry of Education is currently
reviewing the recommendations made by the provincial advisory
committee established in the spring/summer of 2007, on key
strategies needed to help protect children at risk in BC
schools. This committee was comprised of ministry staff,
parents, healthcare and education professionals and allergy
associations, including Anaphylaxis Canada. Stay tuned this
fall for more information on this important initiative.
- Amendments to Ontario Day Nurseries Act.
In May 2007, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services
implemented legislation requiring all its childcare centres
to implement an anaphylaxis policy for all children at risk
within daycare facilities. The legislation requires that
there must be annual staff training, plans to minimize exposure
to allergens and the implantation of emergency procedures.
Check with your childcare facility to ensure they have their
plans in place.
